Documentaries

Ah, summer...

Well, you're here, you're finally here. And it's glorious. And I want you to chew me up and spit me out because I want to be affected by all your amazingness.

I have a feeling that some of these have been made. I'm sure they have; but, nonetheless:

1) I'd like to see a documentary about a group of actors from a former hit TV show and where-are-they-now type of deal. I know we get some of that from: hey, ten years later, in the latest issue of People, here's the cast of Grease!; but, I'm talking something more in-depth that just photos, something like why is Ron Howard one of the most successful working directors out there (also successful at nepotism in getting his daughter's career highballed), and then there's Erin Moran is living in a trailer park. Really?

2) I'd like to see a documentary about the inner working of a non-profit ministry, and not just in the, they secretly suck shit way, but really, let's look up close and personal at people that really want to make a difference. And do, despite the every day crap that's thrown their way. They really want to make the world a better place.

3) Although we perhaps know it and really don't want to believe the depth of it in the industry, could we see a movie about how shallow, greedy and ultimately detrimental Hollywood is in the grand scheme of let's crush any hopes and dreams of real talent, originality and genuine story-telling that Americans may have. Yes, we love the fantasy and need the fantasy, as in, let's all go the movies and forget that America is in the midst of WWI; but, there's a difference between storytelling and "the industry." I guess I want a documentary about how the Kardashians and Gossip Girls are literally permanently scarring the souls and dreams of American kids.

4) And while we're on the subject of greed (I'm fascinated with greed), let's switch to politics. I would like a documentary chronicling, from infancy (or soon thereafter), to childhood, to higher education and on up to their own personal Jesus, the ever expanding ego and unattainable presidential trajectory of the likes of Ted Cruz, Rick Santorum, Donald Trump and perhaps even Hillary. I would like to know what makes these people tick, and even if they are stable enough to hold such a position of power.

5)  I know there's one out there, and I just need to find it. Can we please see a documentary about happiness, and those people that live ordinary, extra-ordinary, mundane and even perhaps really crappy lives, and how they rise above it and find, simply, one way or another, through upbringing, insight, family or faith that place where they go, "hey this is certainly not what I intended for my life, but I am happy."

6) And for good measure, can I please see a documentary about what scientist believe will be the next superdisease that will put a stop to this stupid miserable humanity that sometimes becomes too much.

Roger Ebert

Rest in Peace
06/18/1942-04/04/2013

A prolific, smart and witty movie crictic. The first film critic to win a Pulitzer Prize.
And so kind; during his illness he welcomed friends, visitors and loved ones to share in his joy and memories.
My mom and I used to watch him and Gene on Siskel and Ebert when I was a kid.

- review from Showgirls (1995)

"Nomi catches the eye of Cristal Connors, the star of the big show at the Stardust. Cristal is a slippery bisexual beauty who takes her boyfriend to the Cheetah and treats him to a lap-dance from Nomi, who doesn't like Cristal, but goes along for $500, under orders from her pimp. If all lap-dancers get as carried away as Nomi does, I'll bet they're constantly seeing a chiropractor about their backs."

TOP FUNNIEST MOVIES

(So we got your gems like The Philadelphia Story and When Harry Met Sally which are funny, but more so humorous and clever rather than laugh out loud funny. Now I've tried to pinpoint those which cause a guffaw). And here they are (sorry Joe, kinda short, I'll do better next time)...

Raising Arizona
My favorite.

Holly Hunter, Nicolas Cage. The scene where they are stealing diapers from a convenience store and Nic with the panty hose over his head. LMAO.

Son, you've got a panty on your head.

Zack and Miri Make a Porno
Well once scene. Enema.

Step Brothers
Vulgar and silly and laughing on the floor stupid.

Brennan Huff: Listen, I know that we started out as foe. But after that courageous act that you showed me against the one they call Derek, maybe someday we could become friends. Friends who ride majestic, translucent steeds, shooting flaming arrows across the bridge of Hemdale.

Dale Doback: I would follow you into the mists of Avalon if that's what you mean.

9 to 5
Just have to love it. Fast, witty, endearing, kooky.
Lily Tomlin, Jane Fonda and the one and only Dolly.

Best in Show
This famous comedy troupe proves being barely believable but absolutely wacky means the ride we go on is very funny.

Buck Laughlin: And to think that in some countries these dogs are eaten.

TOP FICTIONARY CHARACTERS

OK, these are super lame, but they come from my childhood/teenage years (or at least my childhood/teenage fantasies)...

Holden Caufield (Catcher in the Rye)
What to say about Holden Caufield.... An extremely compelling character, flawed but admirable in his journey. This is a coming of age story filled with the loss of  idealism, questioning and disillusionment.
All the characters in the book feel real.

Sam Emerson (The Lost Boys)
Corey Haim the actor seemed super cool and this character epitomized that. Ah to be 15, summer, no work, and vampires invading your city. The city Santa Carla isn't even a real city. It's based off of Santa Cruz but they couldn't use Santa Cruz's name because the city didn't want to be known for gang violence.
Walter Galt (The Snarkout Boys)
Fun, just fun.
Snarking Out (sneaking out of your house late at night, going to the movie theater, hanging out, and sneaking back home without getting caught).

Ponyboy Curtis (The Outsiders)
Again, coming of age, questioning, disillusioned yet hopeful.
Greasers vs Socs.

Louis de Pointe du Lac (Interview with the Vampire)
Eternal angst, self loathing, damnation.
Hmmm...seeing a pattern here.

TOP 5 INDEPENDENT FILMS

LITTLE MISS SUNSHINE (2006)

A feel good story for all those who think happiness means perfection. At the end of the movie the family wins the beauty pageant of life despite their (significant, significant, significant) issues. Greg Kinnear, Australian Toni Collette, Steve Carrell are wonderful, and Abagail Breslin in the stripper scene at the end. Priceless.

500 DAYS OF SUMMER (2009)

Zooey Deschanel -- typically she plays the cotton candy girl-next-door character -- in this movie is a manipulating, selfish, coy woman. Joseph Gordon-Levitt is the half of this duo swinging out of control; he plays the ups and down of a failing relationship brilliantly. The split screen story lines are awesome to watch. I don't usually like Deschanel but she proves she can act.

SIDEWAYS (2004)

The cast perfectly creates an intoxicating world of beautifully developed characters, significant relationships and the strange but true reality of those whose lives revolve around wine. Crazy. By the 2nd or 3rd glass the characters and the viewers are pulled into a whirlwind that eventually ends with a headache and hangover but still satisfies immensely. I could do with out Sandra Oh and the sex scenes, but otherwise marvelous.
I am not drinking any f*cking Merlot! - Miles

ANGELS and COWBOYS (2003)

Coming of age in London. I like the friendship between gay and straight roles.

SWINGERS (1996)

Back when Vince Vaughn was young and cool; jazz clubs and martinis by night. Funny, smooth and utterly ridiculous.
Trent: So, what'd you think of that Dorothy girl?
Mike: The whole Judy Garland thing kinda turned me on. Does that make me some kind of fag?
Trent: No, baby, you're money.

Trip through the south. Really reminding me of college: dreams, regrets & a different world.
