TOP 5 INDEPENDENT FILMS

LITTLE MISS SUNSHINE (2006)

A feel good story for all those who think happiness means perfection. At the end of the movie the family wins the beauty pageant of life despite their (significant, significant, significant) issues. Greg Kinnear, Australian Toni Collette, Steve Carrell are wonderful, and Abagail Breslin in the stripper scene at the end. Priceless.

500 DAYS OF SUMMER (2009)

Zooey Deschanel -- typically she plays the cotton candy girl-next-door character -- in this movie is a manipulating, selfish, coy woman. Joseph Gordon-Levitt is the half of this duo swinging out of control; he plays the ups and down of a failing relationship brilliantly. The split screen story lines are awesome to watch. I don't usually like Deschanel but she proves she can act.

SIDEWAYS (2004)

The cast perfectly creates an intoxicating world of beautifully developed characters, significant relationships and the strange but true reality of those whose lives revolve around wine. Crazy. By the 2nd or 3rd glass the characters and the viewers are pulled into a whirlwind that eventually ends with a headache and hangover but still satisfies immensely. I could do with out Sandra Oh and the sex scenes, but otherwise marvelous.

ANGELS and COWBOYS (2003)

Coming of age in London. I like the friendship between gay and straight roles.

SWINGERS (1996)

Back when Vince Vaughn was young and cool; jazz clubs and martinis by night. Funny, smooth and utterly ridiculous.
Trent: So, what'd you think of that Dorothy girl?
Mike: The whole Judy Garland thing kinda turned me on. Does that make me some kind of fag?
Trent: No, baby, you're money.
